Job Title: Consultant Cardiac Surgeon

Job Purpose
The Consultant Cardiac Surgeon will provide expert, high-quality, and patient-centered surgical care for adults and/or children with complex cardiac conditions.
The role holder will be responsible for the pre-operative evaluation, surgical management, and post-operative care of patients, serving as a key specialist within our Cardiovascular Services line.
The role also involves teaching, mentoring junior medical staff, and contributing to clinical excellence and innovation in cardiac surgery.
Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities
Clinical Care and Surgical Management:
Provide comprehensive consultant-level surgical care for patients requiring procedures including, but not limited to, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve repair/replacement, aortic surgery, and complex congenital heart defect repairs.
Perform and interpret specialized diagnostic tests and surgical planning procedures relevant to cardiac surgery, including echocardiography and cardiac catheterization data.
Develop, implement, and monitor individualized perioperative and long-term treatment plans for patients, ensuring the highest standards of evidence-based practice.
Provide expert consultation to colleagues in cardiology, intensive care, and other specialties on surgical aspects of patient care.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration:
Work collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team including cardiologists, cardiac anesthetists, intensivists, perfusionists, specialist nurses, and physiotherapists to provide integrated patient care throughout the surgical journey.
Actively participate in multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings, specifically the Heart Team, to discuss and determine the optimal treatment strategy for complex patient cases.
Quality Assurance and Clinical Governance:
Adhere to and promote all hospital policies, clinical guidelines, and surgical safety protocols.
Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement initiatives, and risk management activities to enhance patient safety, surgical outcomes, and service delivery.
Ensure full compliance with all national and international regulatory and accreditation standards.
Education, Training, and Research:
Provide teaching, training, supervision, and mentorship to surgical residents, medical officers, interns, and other healthcare professionals within the cardiovascular team.
Contribute to the department's educational program through grand rounds, seminars, and morbidity and mortality (M&M) meetings.
Engage in and promote clinical research activities to advance the field of cardiac surgery and improve patient outcomes.
Administrative Duties:
Participate in the development and implementation of service strategies and new clinical programs within the Cardiovascular Services directorate.
Ensure accurate, legible, and timely completion of all clinical records and documentation.
Must have skills
Cardiothoracic / Cardiac Surgery
Qualifications
Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
Fellowship or equivalent postgraduate qualification in Cardiothoracic/ Cardiac Surgery from a recognized international board.
Possession of a valid medical license.
Minimum of 10 years of experience post fellowship -qualification (Consultant level) in Cardiac Surgery, with a proven track record of independent practice.
Proven experience in managing a broad range of complex cardiac surgical cases with excellent outcomes.
Experience in clinical research and a record of publications in peer-reviewed journals is highly desirable.
