Job Purpose
The Breast Surgeon will be responsible for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of breast diseases, including benign and malignant conditions. This role demands a high level of expertise in performing complex breast surgeries, including mastectomies, lumpectomies, and reconstructive procedures.
The role holder will play a critical role in early cancer detection, patient education, and providing comprehensive care throughout the treatment journey. As a senior member of the medical team, the Breast Surgeon will contribute to the development and implementation of hospital policies, participate in quality improvement initiatives, and lead clinical research efforts to advance breast health management.
Diagnose and treat a range of breast conditions, including cancer, benign tumours, and inflammatory diseases.
Perform advanced surgical procedures, including mastectomies, breast-conserving surgeries (lumpectomies), and sentinel lymph node biopsies.
Collaborate with plastic surgeons to offer reconstructive surgery options for patients’ post-mastectomy.
Conduct regular outpatient clinics to monitor patients pre- and post-surgery.
Patient-Centred Care:
Deliver empathetic and culturally competent care to patients and their families.
Provide thorough explanations of diagnoses, treatment options, surgical procedures, and recovery expectations.
Ensure meticulous documentation of patient records, complying with ethical and legal standards.
Team Collaboration:
Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings to discuss and plan comprehensive treatment strategies with oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists.
Work closely with radiologists for accurate imaging interpretations and biopsy procedures.
Partner with oncologists for chemotherapy and radiotherapy planning.
Collaborate with nursing teams to optimise perioperative and post-operative care.
Education, Leadership and Development:
Supervise and guide junior doctors, registrars, and medical students.
Lead training sessions on advancements in breast surgery techniques and patient care.
Support continuous professional development (CPD) initiatives within the hospital.
Act as lead for Equality and Diversity in the department.
Research and Innovation:
Engage in clinical research projects to advance breast cancer detection and treatment.
Publish findings in reputable medical journals and present at professional conferences.
Stay updated on global advancements in breast surgery and oncology, implementing evidence-based practices.
Compliance and Governance:
Adhere to hospital protocols, national healthcare regulations, and international standards.
Ensure compliance with infection control measures, patient safety guidelines, and risk management policies.
Participate in audits, peer reviews, and clinical governance activities to uphold the highest standards of care.
Must have skills
Advanced Surgical Oncology
Qualifications
MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
Fellowship in Breast Surgery or a related surgical specialty.
Certification in Advanced Surgical Oncology.
Valid medical licence to practise in Nigeria or eligibility for specialist registration.
Minimum of 7 years of post-specialization experience in breast surgery.
Proven expertise in complex surgical and oncoplastic procedures.
Demonstrated ability to lead surgical teams and mentor staff.
Experience in developing clinical protocols and guidelines.
Participation in hospital governance committees and quality improvement initiatives.
