Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a Danish international non-governmental organisation, which promotes and supports durable solutions to the problems faced by refugees and internally displaced people all over the world. DRC is present in more than 30 conflict territories around the world assisting displaced people with shelter, food, income-generating activities, and a wide range of other assistance. It is of utmost importance for DRC to work in compliance with the DRC Accountability and Quality Management system and national legislations. Smooth, reliable and effective operational systems are preconditions for DRC to maintain its position as a trustworthy and reliable partner for our donors and an accountable organisation towards our beneficiaries.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Information Management (IM) Specialist

Location: Abuja
Contract type: Expatriate or national contract
Contract length: 1 year, with the possibility of extension depending on funding availability

Background

  • A country of around 230M inhabitants, with over 129 million currently living in poverty, Nigeria faces one of the world's most complex humanitarian crises in the world.
  • The fifteen-year conflict in the Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe (BAY) states, driven primarily by the Boko Haram insurgency and its splinter groups (ISWAP and JAS), has resulted in widespread displacement, violations of international humanitarian and human rights laws, and acute protection needs.
  • More than 2.3 million people remain internally displaced in the northeast, while in the Northwest region an additional 1.3M people have been forcibly displaced due to banditry, kidnapping, and herders -farmers conflict.
  • Northern Nigeria is heavily impacted by climate change, including lengthening lean seasons and erratic rainy seasons and droughts, resulting in food production shortfalls and more population displacements. Severe acute malnutrition is affecting a world-high total of 1.8 million children across BAY and northwestern states.
  • In 2026 Nigeria’s humanitarian system will be transitioning from UN-led toward nationally owned coordination, with some lack of clarity regarding concrete mechanisms to be it in place and amid a funding crisis.
  • DRC has been operating in Nigeria since 2016. The Country Office is in Abuja and has 2 area offices in Maiduguri and Sokoto with sub offices in Gusau, Bama and Banki and a mobile team in Katsina.
  • DRC Nigeria's multi-sectoral response addresses core Strategic Priority Interventions: Hard-to-Reach populations, Economic Recovery, Protection, and increasingly climate resilience.
  • The operation focuses on both emergency response and solutions programming with expanding partnerships with local actors.

Purpose

  • The Information Management Specialist will be responsible for supporting the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) Nigeria’s programs by developing and managing information management systems to ensure high-quality data collection, storage, analysis, and reporting.
  • The role involves working closely with the MEAL team, Coordination and Area level, technical and implementation team, HQ and HQ Hubs to ensure that information management systems are efficient, effective, and aligned with DRC’s operational goals.
  • The Information Management Specialist will play a critical role in ensuring that data is accessible, accurate, and used to inform decision-making and strategy development.
  • This position will focus on data management across DRC Nigeria’s programs, ensuring that all information management activities contribute to program learning, accountability, and performance improvement.

Duties and Responsibilities
Information System Development and Management:

  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of information management systems, ensuring they meet DRC’s data collection and analysis needs across all projects and sectors.
  • Maintain and regularly update DRC’s information systems, including databases and dashboards, to ensure data accuracy, accessibility, and security.
  • Ensure that information management processes are standardized across all projects and sectors, in line with DRC’s Global and Country-level Strategies.
  • Develop tools, templates, and guidelines for data collection, entry, and management, ensuring the accuracy and quality of data.
  • Provide ongoing technical support to program technical and implementation teams and MEAL team on information management processes and systems.

Data Collection, Analysis, and Reporting:

  • Facilitate the collection, storage, and management of program and sectoral data, including needs assessments, surveys, evaluations, and monitoring activities to ensure proper and accurate knowledge management system in place.
  • Work closely with the Area MEAL Team, Technical and Implementation Team to design and implement robust data analysis frameworks for surveys, assessments, evaluations, and monitoring results, ensuring high-quality insights that inform program performance and strategic decision-making.
  • Develop data visualizations, dashboards, and reporting tools that allow for effective communication of key findings and program performance.
  • Collaborate with program teams to analyze and interpret data, providing insights that enhance program quality and effectiveness.
  • Ensure the integration of geographic information systems (GIS) into data collection processes, where appropriate.

Capacity Strengthening and Support:

  • Train and build the capacity of staff on information management tools, systems, and processes, ensuring they can effectively collect and manage program data.
  • Provide ongoing technical support to Area Office staff and partners to enhance their data collection, management, and reporting skills.
  • Support the MEAL team in developing and delivering training on data analysis and reporting to improve program quality and accountability.

Data Quality and Protection:

  • Ensure data protection and confidentiality are maintained in line with DRC’s data protection and GDPR policies.
  • Develop and implement data quality assurance processes to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and timeliness of data collected across programs.
  • Regularly review and audit data collection processes to identify and address potential issues in data quality and security.

Collaboration and Coordination:

  • Work closely with program teams, area/ field teams, MEAL, and IT departments to ensure data needs are met and systems are integrated into broader program strategies.
  • Coordinate with external partners, including UN agencies, NGOs, and government bodies, to ensure data sharing and reporting are aligned with sector standards and requirements.

Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) Support:

  • Collaborate with the MEAL team to ensure that information management activities support wider monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning objectives.
  • Assist in documenting lessons learned, best practices, and case studies from program data, ensuring these insights inform future program design and implementation.

Partnerships with Civil Society Organizations (CSO):

  • Ensure partner capacities are assessed in terms if IM systems through due diligence/ capacity assessment
  • Lead the development of IM-related training plan and organize capacity strengthening on IM for partners
  • Support partners with tools and systems required for them to comply with donor and DRC MEAL technical requirements/standards.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the HoP. The responsibilities listed in the JD are not exhaustive and may be readjusted according to operational needs but will remain in line with the overall purpose of the role.

Education

  • University Degree in Computer Science or Programming, Information Management, Information Technologies, or other relevant area. Masters preferred.
  • Certificate in programming languages desirable.

Languages:

  • Fluency in written and spoken in English
  • Local language will be an asset (Hausa, Kanuri, etc.).

Desirable:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure in volatile environments.
  • High level of confidentiality and ethical conduct.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving abilities.

Experience and technical competencies:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in information management, database design or database administration, and/or information management with development projects implemented by national/international NGOs/UN.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in data analysis software (Excel, SQL, R, Access, PowerBI or other statistical package)
  • Strong knowledge of data management systems, including database design, management, and administration.
  • Experience with GIS mapping and other spatial analysis tools is an advantage.
  • In-depth understanding of database platforms and the ability to write code and queries.
  • Knowledge of M&E processes and data collection platforms such as ActivityInfo, Kobo, ODK, SurveyCTO, CommCare.
  • Demonstrated experience in training and capacity-building on information management systems and data collection processes.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work in diverse teams.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

Salary and conditions will be in accordance with the DRC National salary structure. This is contractually a national position for which local Nigerian terms and conditions apply.
