Founded in 2021 in Okija, Anambra State, Gonzaga Jesuit College is the fourth Jesuit secondary school in Nigeria, following those in Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Lagos. It is run by the Society of Jesus, in collaboration with the Handmaids of the Holy Child Jesus, and welcomes both Christian and non-Christian students.

Gonzaga Jesuit College, Okija, is a Jesuit-run co-ed boarding secondary school that blends high-quality academics, faith and values-based formation, modern infrastructure, and scholarship programs to make a positive impact in Nigeria.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Home Economics Teacher

Location: Ihiala / Okija, Anambra
Employment Type: Full-time

Job Summary

  • The Home Economics Teacher will be responsible for equipping students with essential, practical life skills across food and nutrition, clothing and textiles, home management, beauty and cosmetology, and catering craft practices.
  • The ideal candidate will blend theoretical instruction with hands-on practical sessions, fostering creativity, consumer awareness, and self-reliance while preparing students thoroughly for internal assessments and external examinations (such as WAEC, NECO, or Basic Education Certificate Examination / BECE).

Responsibilities

  • Curriculum Delivery: Plan and deliver interactive lessons covering the core pillars of Home Economics, including culinary arts, nutrition, tailoring, child development, and family living.
  • Practical Session Management: Organize and supervise practical classes in the Home Economics laboratory or home economics room (e.g., cooking and sewing practicals), ensuring strict adherence to hygiene and safety standards.
  • Exam Preparation: Prepare students intensively for both the theoretical and heavy practical components of regional terminal examinations.
  • Assessment & Evaluation: Grade students' practical projects (such as garments or catering exhibitions) and written assessments fairly and promptly, providing constructive feedback.
  • Administrative Duties: Maintain precise records of student progress, lesson plans, and attendance, while actively participating in departmental and general staff meetings.

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Education: A Bachelor’s Degree in Education (B.Ed.) in Home Economics (or Vocational and Technical Education), or a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Home Economics / Food and Nutrition / Textiles plus a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).
  • Professional Certification: Registration with a relevant national teaching council or regulatory body (such as TRCN) is highly preferred.
  • Experience: A minimum of 3 years of teaching and laboratory experience at the secondary school level, with a proven track record of successfully coordinating external practical examinations.

Other Requirements:

  • Basic digital literacy, including the ability to use basic spreadsheet software for inventory/budget tracking and school management portals.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for collaborating with storekeepers, purchasing managers, department heads, and parents.
  • High level of professional ethics, neatness, and dedication to grooming self-reliant students.

Key Skills:

  • Practical Technical Mastery: High proficiency in culinary techniques, food presentation, pattern drafting, cosmetology, garment construction, and household management.
  • Safety & Hygiene Leadership: Strict maintenance of sanitation, first-aid, and safety protocols within a kitchen or textile lab environment.
  • Resourcefulness & Budgeting: Ability to plan cost-effective practical lessons without compromising instructional quality.
  • Instructional Clarity: Skill in demonstrating physical, step-by-step techniques clearly to large groups of students.
  • Patience & Organization: Strong organizational skills to manage multi-step practical tasks, clean-up routines, and varying student skill levels simultaneously.

Remuneration & Benefits

  • Salary: Competitive monthly gross salary, commensurate with qualifications, experience, and institutional scale.
  • Benefits: Access to contributory pension schemes, comprehensive health insurance coverage, and opportunities for continuous professional development (CPD).
