Founded in 2021 in Okija, Anambra State, Gonzaga Jesuit College is the fourth Jesuit secondary school in Nigeria, following those in Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Lagos. It is run by the Society of Jesus, in collaboration with the Handmaids of the Holy Child Jesus, and welcomes both Christian and non-Christian students.

Gonzaga Jesuit College, Okija, is a Jesuit-run co-ed boarding secondary school that blends high-quality academics, faith and values-based formation, modern infrastructure, and scholarship programs to make a positive impact in Nigeria.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Primary School Teacher

Location: Ihiala / Okija, Anambra
Employment Type: Full-time

Job Summary

  • The Primary School Teacher will be responsible for fostering a nurturing, stimulating, and safe environment where young learners can develop foundational academic, social, and emotional skills.
  • The ideal candidate will use creative, child-centered teaching methods to deliver a robust primary curriculum, instilling a lifelong love for learning and preparing pupils successfully for transitioning to higher education levels.

Responsibilities

  • Curriculum Delivery: Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging, age-appropriate lessons across core primary subjects, including Numeracy, Literacy, Science, and Social Studies.
  • Child-Centered Instruction: Utilize diverse teaching aids, storytelling, educational games, and practical activities to accommodate different learning styles and paces.
  • Social & Emotional Development: Guide pupils in developing foundational social skills, emotional regulation, empathy, and good manners.
  • Classroom Management: Maintain a warm, highly organized, and positive classroom environment that minimizes distractions and promotes safety.
  • Assessment & Progress Tracking: Conduct regular formative assessments, maintain detailed portfolios of pupil development, and provide constructive feedback to support individual growth.
  • Parent Communication: Maintain open, professional lines of communication with parents and guardians regarding their child’s academic progress, behavioral changes, and well-being.
  • Extracurricular & Pastoral Care: Supervise pupils during breaks, lunch hours, and school excursions, and actively lead or assist with co-curricular clubs or events.

Key Skills:

  • Early Literacy & Numeracy Mastery: Strong knowledge of primary education methodologies, including synthetic phonics (e.g., Jolly Phonics) and concrete-pictorial-abstract math concepts.
  • Patience & High Empathy: Deep understanding of child psychology and the ability to remain calm, patient, and encouraging under pressure.
  • Creativity & Resourcefulness: Skill in designing colorful instructional materials and transforming abstract ideas into concrete, fun activities.
  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Exceptional ability to connect with young children at their level while maintaining high professionalism with parents and colleagues.
  • Classroom Organization: Excellent time management and spatial organization to handle transitions between subjects and manage physical learning materials cleanly.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Education (B.Ed.) in Primary Education, Early Childhood Education, or a related field; or a Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.Sc.) in any discipline combined with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) or a National Certificate in Education (NCE).
  • Professional Certification: Registration with a relevant national teaching council or regulatory body (such as TRCN) is highly preferred.
  • Experience: A minimum of 3 years of teaching experience within a recognized primary school settings, with a visible track record of boosting early literacy and numeracy skills.

Other Requirements:

  • Basic digital literacy, including proficiency with interactive whiteboards, basic school management systems, and virtual learning environments.
  • Impeccable personal hygiene, neat appearance, and a high level of moral and professional ethics.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with department heads, grade-level coordinators, school nurses, and administration.

Remuneration & Benefits

  • Salary: N150,000 monthly, commensurate with qualifications, experience, and institutional scale.
