Founded in 2021 in Okija, Anambra State, Gonzaga Jesuit College is the fourth Jesuit secondary school in Nigeria, following those in Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Lagos. The Igbo Language Teacher will be responsible for promoting the mastery of the Igbo language and fostering a deep appreciation for Igbo cultural heritage.
The ideal candidate will equip students with listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in central Igbo (Igbo Izugbe), preparing them thoroughly for internal assessments and external examinations (such as WAEC, NECO, or BECE).
Responsibilities
Curriculum Delivery: Plan and deliver engaging, structured lessons covering Igbo grammar (Utasụsụ Igbo), literature (Agụmagụ Igbo), and culture/customs (Omenala Igbo).
Cultural Engagement: Organize and lead cultural activities, drama, poetry recitations (Abụ), and traditional presentations to make learning immersive and vibrant.
Exam Preparation: Guide senior students through prescribed prose, poetry, and drama texts, focusing on thematic analysis and cultural contexts required for terminal regional examinations.
Assessment & Evaluation: Design valid assessment tools, grade compositions and comprehension scripts promptly, and provide constructive feedback to support language acquisition.
Extracurricular Support: Mentor or assist with the school’s Cultural Society, Debate Club, or related co-curricular activities that promote indigenous language proficiency.
Administrative Duties: Maintain accurate student records (attendance, grades, and lesson plans) and participate actively in departmental and staff meetings.
Education & Experience Requirements
Education: A Bachelor’s Degree in Education (B.Ed.) in Igbo, or a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Igbo/Linguistics plus a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).
Professional Certification: Registration with a relevant national teaching council or regulatory body (such as TRCN) is highly preferred.
Experience: A minimum of 2–3 years of classroom teaching experience at the secondary school level, with a documented history of strong student performance in external examinations.
Key Skills:
Language & Cultural Mastery: Exceptional proficiency in written and spoken central Igbo (Igbo Izugbe), with a profound knowledge of Igbo customs, proverbs (Ilu), idioms, and history.
Instructional Clarity: Ability to teach language structures and abstract cultural concepts clearly to both native and non-native speakers.
Communication: Strong bilingual communication skills (Igbo and English) to effectively guide students and interface with parents.
Creativity: Skill in using storytelling, music, and drama to make language learning engaging and interactive.
Patience & Empathy: Ability to encourage students who may struggle with tone marking (Akara Udaolu), orthography, or oral expression.
Other Requirements:
Basic digital literacy, including the ability to use interactive boards, word processing tools (with support for tone markings), and school management portals.
High level of professional ethics, cultural pride, and dedication to the preservation of indigenous languages.
Willingness to collaborate with the Languages Department, school administration, and parents.
