The AMCE will provide exceptional care to people on the African continent, regardless of their financial means. Developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in clinical partnership with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust., AMCE Abuja is the first of five centres planned for development in Africa.

Job Title: Cyclotron Medical Physicist

Job Purpose

• The Cyclotron Medical Physicist will be responsible for the safe and effective operation of the cyclotron facility within AMCE, supporting positron emission tomography (PET) imaging and other nuclear medicine applications.
• The role holder will oversee radionuclide production, radiation safety, equipment calibration, and compliance with regulatory requirements, while also contributing to research, staff training, and multidisciplinary collaborations.
• This role combines technical expertise with leadership and mentorship, playing a pivotal role in enhancing AMCE’s diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities.

Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities
Cyclotron Operations & Maintenance

• Oversee the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the cyclotron facility.
• Perform calibration, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting of cyclotron systems and associated equipment.
• Coordinate radionuclide production schedules to meet clinical demand for PET imaging.

Quality Assurance & Compliance:

• Develop and implement QA protocols for cyclotron operations and radionuclide production.
• Conduct regular safety audits, risk assessments, and radiation monitoring.
• Ensure compliance with Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) and international radiation safety standards.

Radiation Safety & Risk Management:

• Oversee safe handling, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials.
• Implement emergency response protocols for cyclotron-related incidents.
• Provide radiation safety training and guidance to staff.

Research & Innovation:

• Engage in research and development to optimize radionuclide production and enhance imaging applications.
• Contribute to clinical trials, protocol development, and departmental innovation projects.
• Publish and present research findings in peer-reviewed platforms and conferences.

Training & Mentorship:

• Train and mentor junior physicists, technologists, and local staff on cyclotron operations and radiation safety.
• Build capacity and transfer knowledge to strengthen local expertise.
• Support academic collaborations with external institutions.

Leadership & Collaboration:

• Work closely with nuclear medicine physicians, radiologists, technologists, and multidisciplinary teams.
• Represent the department in institutional committees and strategic planning initiatives.
• Support AMCE’s vision for excellence in diagnostics and contribute to continuous service improvement.

Qualifications

• Master’s Degree or PhD in Medical Physics or a closely related field.
• Additional certifications in radiation safety or cyclotron operations preferred.
• Strong technical knowledge of cyclotron systems, PET imaging, and radiochemistry.
• Proven ability to implement QA systems and regulatory compliance frameworks.
• Commitment to patient safety, continuous improvement, and clinical governance.
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in cyclotron operations and PET physics.
• Demonstrated expertise in radionuclide production and radiation safety protocols.
• Prior experience in research and development in medical physics.
• Experience mentoring or supervising staff in a medical physics setting.
