Job Title: Medical Laboratory Scientist - Hematology
The Medical Laboratory Scientist - Hematology will be responsible for performing a variety of hematological tests and procedures to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of patient conditions.
This role involves analyzing blood and other bodily fluids, interpreting results, and ensuring the accuracy and reliability of laboratory findings.
The Medical Laboratory Scientist works closely with other laboratory staff and healthcare providers to deliver quality patient care.
Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities
Hematological Testing and Analysis:
Perform a wide range of hematological tests, including complete blood counts (CBC), reticulocyte counts, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and coagulation tests.
Operate and maintain automated hematology analyzers and other laboratory equipment.
Prepare and examine blood smears to identify cellular abnormalities.
Analyze and interpret test results, ensuring accuracy and reliability.
Validate and release test results according to laboratory protocols.
Troubleshoot and resolve any issues with testing procedures or equipment.
Quality Control and Quality Assurance:
Perform and document quality control procedures to ensure the accuracy and precision of test results.
Monitor and evaluate quality control data, identifying and addressing any trends or discrepancies.
Participate in internal and external quality assurance programs.
Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment.
Ensure compliance with laboratory policies and procedures.
Investigate and document any quality control failures or incidents.
Specimen Processing and Handling:
Receive, inspect, and process blood and other bodily fluid specimens.
Ensure proper specimen labeling, handling, and storage.
Prepare reagents and solutions for testing.
Maintain an organized and efficient workflow in the hematology laboratory.
Prioritize and process urgent or STAT requests.
Dispose of biohazardous waste according to safety protocols.
Equipment Operation and Maintenance:
Operate hematology and coagulation analyzers safely and efficiently, following manufacturer's instructions and laboratory protocols.
Perform routine equipment checks and maintenance, identifying and reporting any malfunctions.
Ensure that equipment is calibrated correctly and ready for use.
Maintain a clean and organized work environment, ensuring that equipment is handled with care.
Stay updated on new technologies and advancements in hematology laboratory equipment.
Troubleshoot minor equipment problems and seek assistance from biomedical engineering when necessary.
Documentation and Record Keeping:
Maintain accurate and complete patient records, including test results, quality control data, and equipment maintenance logs.
Utilize the laboratory information system (LIS) for data entry, retrieval, and reporting.
Ensure that all documentation is legible, accurate, and complies with legal and ethical requirements.
Protect patient confidentiality by adhering to data protection policies and procedures.
Generate reports and summaries of laboratory tests as required.
Assist with data collection and analysis for research or quality improvement purposes.
Laboratory Safety:
Adhere to all laboratory safety regulations and guidelines to minimize the risk of accidents and exposure to biohazards.
Handle and dispose of biohazardous materials safely, using appropriate containers and procedures.
Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, gowns, and face shields.
Follow infection control procedures to prevent the spread of infection.
Maintain a clean and organized work environment, ensuring that safety equipment is readily available.
Participate in safety training programs and drills.
Procedure Development and Validation:
Assist in the development and implementation of new hematology and coagulation procedures.
Evaluate and validate new testing methodologies and equipment.
Prepare and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Ensure that all procedures are performed according to established protocols.
Document all procedural changes and updates.
Train other staff members on new procedures and equipment.
Inventory Management:
Monitor and manage the inventory of reagents, controls, and supplies to ensure availability for testing.
Order and receive laboratory supplies, verifying shipments and ensuring proper storage.
Ensure that all reagents and supplies are stored properly and within expiration dates.
Prevent stockouts and minimize waste of laboratory materials.
Maintain accurate records of inventory levels and usage.
Control costs associated with laboratory supplies and reagents.
Professional Development:
Maintain professional certification and licensure, meeting all continuing education requirements.
Attend conferences, workshops, and training programs to enhance knowledge and skills.
Stay current with advancements in hematology and laboratory technology.

Education, Skills and Competencies
Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a related field.
Certification or licensure as a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Technologist.
Proficiency in performing a wide range of hematological tests and procedures.
Strong knowledge of hematology principles, techniques, and instrumentation.
Ability to operate and maintain automated hematology analyzers and other laboratory equipment.
Competence in preparing and examining blood smears and identifying cellular abnormalities.
Ability to analyze and interpret test results accurately and efficiently.
Knowledge of quality control and quality assurance procedures.
Computer literacy and ability to use laboratory information systems (LIS).
