We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Chief Operating Officer (COO)

Location: Lagos

Job Purpose

  • The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for the day-to-day operational leadership of the fintech Group, translating the Group's strategic vision into efficient, scalable, and well-governed execution across all subsidiaries.
  • The COO partners closely with the Group CEO and Executive Management Team to drive operational excellence, regulatory compliance, product delivery, and organizational performance, ensuring the Group's platforms and businesses run reliably, securely, and profitably at scale.

Key Responsibilties

  • Operational Strategy & Execution: Translate the Group's strategic objectives into operational plans, ensuring effective execution across all subsidiaries and business lines.
  • Cross-Entity Operations Oversight: Oversee day-to-day operations across all Group fintech entities, ensuring consistency in processes, service quality, and performance standards Group-wide.
  • Technology & Product Delivery: Work closely with Technology and Product leadership to ensure platforms, applications, and infrastructure are scalable, secure, and support the Group's growth objectives.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure all Group entities operate in full compliance with applicable financial services, fintech, and data protection regulations (e.g. CBN, NDPR, and other relevant regulatory frameworks), working closely with Legal, Compliance, and Risk teams.
  • Performance Management: Establish and monitor key operational and performance metrics (KPIs/OKRs) across business units, driving accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Process Optimization: Identify and implement process improvements, automation opportunities, and best practices to enhance efficiency, reduce operational risk, and lower cost-to-serve.
  • People Leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop senior operational leaders and their teams across the Group, fostering a high-performance, accountable, and customer-centric culture.
  • Financial Oversight: Partner with the CFO on operational budgeting, cost management, and resource allocation, ensuring operational spend aligns with business priorities and profitability targets.
  • Customer Experience: Ensure operational processes support a seamless, reliable customer experience across all products and channels, and drive resolution of systemic operational issues affecting customers.
  • Vendor & Partnership Management: Oversee key operational vendor and technology partner relationships, including payment processors, banking partners, and infrastructure providers.
  • Business Continuity & Risk Resilience: Ensure robust business continuity, disaster recovery, and operational risk management frameworks are in place and regularly tested across the Group.
  • Board & Stakeholder Reporting: Provide regular operational performance updates to the CEO, Board, and Executive Management Team, and represent the Group in relevant regulatory, investor, or partner engagements as required.
  • M&A / New Entity Integration: Support the operational integration of new products, business lines, or acquired entities into the Group's operating model, where applicable.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field; an MBA or relevant postgraduate qualification is strongly preferred.
  • 12-15 years' progressive experience in operations, general management, or executive leadership roles, with at least 5 years in a senior executive capacity.
  • Significant experience within fintech, digital banking, payments, or financial services is required.
  • Proven track record of scaling operations across multiple business units, products, or entities in a fast-growing, regulated environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of relevant regulatory frameworks (e.g. CBN guidelines, AML/CFT, data protection regulations) governing fintech operations.
  • Experience working directly with a CEO, Board, and Executive Management Team on strategic and operational matters.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong strategic and analytical thinking, with the ability to translate strategy into operational execution.
  • Exceptional leadership and people management skills, with experience building and leading high-performing, multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Deep understanding of fintech/payments operations, technology platforms, and digital financial services.
  • Strong financial acumen, including budgeting, cost management, and P&L accountability.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently with regulators, investors, board members, and partners.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making ability, particularly under pressure or in ambiguous, fast-changing environments.
  • Strong change management and process improvement capability.
  • High level of integrity, discretion, and commitment to regulatory compliance and risk management.

Key Relationships:

  • Internal: Group CEO, Board of Directors, CFO, CTO/Head of Technology, Chief Risk/Compliance Officer, Heads of Business Units across all Group entities, HR.
  • External: Regulators (e.g. Central Bank, financial services regulators), banking and payment partners, technology vendors, investors, and other strategic partners.

Work Conditions:

  • Executive-level role requiring flexibility beyond standard office hours, including availability for urgent operational or regulatory matters.
  • Regular travel across Group entities and to meetings with regulators, partners, and investors as required.
