Job Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing high-quality, patient-centered nursing care in accordance with professional standards, hospital policies, and regulatory requirements.
The RN assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care while collaborating with physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care:
Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments of patients upon admission and throughout hospitalization.
Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care plans.
Monitor, record, and report patients' conditions, vital signs, symptoms, and progress.
Administer medications and treatments safely and accurately as prescribed by physicians.
Perform nursing procedures such as wound dressing, catheterization, IV therapy, injections, and specimen collection.
Recognize changes in patient conditions and initiate appropriate interventions.
Respond promptly and effectively to medical emergencies.
Clinical Documentation:
Maintain accurate, timely, and complete patient records in electronic or paper-based systems.
Document assessments, interventions, medications, treatments, and patient responses.
Ensure confidentiality and security of patient information.
Patient Education:
Educate patients and their families on disease conditions, medications, treatment plans, and discharge instructions.
Provide health promotion and disease prevention counseling.
Encourage patient participation in care decisions.
Collaboration and Communication:
Collaborate effectively with physicians, pharmacists, laboratory personnel, and other multidisciplinary team members.
Participate in ward rounds and clinical discussions.
Communicate patient information during shift handovers using established protocols.
Infection Prevention and Control:
Adhere strictly to infection prevention and control policies and procedures.
Maintain a clean, safe, and therapeutic environment for patients and staff.
Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Quality and Safety:
Comply with hospital policies, nursing standards, and ethical guidelines.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and patient safety programs.
Report incidents, accidents, and near misses promptly.
Ensure safe handling and administration of medications.
Equipment Management:
Operate and monitor medical equipment safely and effectively.
Ensure nursing equipment is clean, functional, and appropriately maintained.
Report equipment malfunctions promptly.
Professional Development:
Participate in continuing professional development (CPD) activities.
Attend departmental meetings, training sessions, and mandatory education programs.
Maintain current nursing knowledge and competencies.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education:
Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.NSc.), Registered Nurse (RN), or equivalent qualification from an accredited institution.
Professional Certification:
Current registration and valid practicing license with the appropriate nursing regulatory body (e.g., the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria).
Additional certifications such as Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) are an advantage.
Experience:
Minimum of 1–3 years of clinical nursing experience in a hospital or healthcare setting.
Experience in medical-surgical, emergency, pediatric, ICU, or specialty nursing is an added advantage.
