Senior Backend Engineer (Payments) at Fairmoney Microfinance Bank - Hybrid

FairMoney is building the leading mobile bank for emerging markets. We started with a digital microcredit application on Android, and currently roll out additional financial services (current account, savings, debit card) while expanding the product to Western Africa and South-East Asia.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Senior Backend Engineer (Payments)

Location: Lagos
Job type: Full time (Hybrid)

Role Summary

• We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer who can own complex backend initiatives from design to production.
• The ideal candidate has strong engineering fundamentals, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently while delivering scalable, reliable systems.

Requirements

• 4–6+ years of professional backend software engineering experience.
• Strong experience building, and operating scalable distributed systems.
• Strong understanding of:
  • Synchronous and asynchronous communication patterns
  • Distributed systems
  • Data consistency
  • Concurrency
  • API design, external integrations, and error handling

• Strong experience with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL), including:
  • Schema design
  • Query optimization and performance tuning
  • Indexing strategies
  • Transaction management
  • Database scalability and optimization
• Experience building highly available, resilient, and observable systems.
• Strong debugging, root cause analysis, and production troubleshooting skills.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a pragmatic approach to designing scalable solutions.
• Comfortable leveraging AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering productivity and code quality.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Payments or FinTech domain experience is highly preferred.
• Golang experience is a plus, but not required.
• Experience with cloud-native architectures, microservices, and event-driven systems
