We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: General Manager

Location: Abuja (FCT) 
Reports to: Board of Directors / Managing Director
Direct Reports: Executive Assistant to the General Manager, Operations Manager, Front Office Manager, Executive Housekeeper, Food & Beverage Manager, Executive Chef, Financial Controller, Human Resources Manager, Chief Engineer, Sales & Marketing Manager, Procurement Manager, Information Technology Manager, Chief Security Officer, Spa & Recreation Manager, Internal Auditor

Main Functions

  • The General Manager (GM) is the highest-ranking executive responsible for providing strategic leadership, operational oversight, and overall management of the hotel.
  • The role is accountable for achieving operational excellence, sustainable profitability, exceptional guest satisfaction, brand reputation, and long-term business growth while ensuring compliance with all statutory, regulatory, and corporate governance requirements.
  • The General Manager oversees all aspects of hotel operations, including Rooms Division, Food & Beverage, Culinary, Sales & Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, Engineering, Procurement, Security, Information Technology, Housekeeping, Laundry, Spa & Recreation, Guest Services, Facilities Management, and Administration.
  • The role is responsible for developing and implementing strategic business initiatives, driving revenue growth, improving operational efficiency, maintaining superior service standards, and ensuring alignment with the hotel's vision, mission, and business objectives.
  • The General Manager serves as the principal representative of the hotel, maintaining strong relationships with owners, investors, government agencies, diplomatic missions, regulatory authorities, corporate clients, travel partners, suppliers, hospitality associations, and the local community while positioning the hotel as a preferred luxury hospitality destination within Abuja and Nigeria.

Role Responsibilities
Executive Leadership & Strategic Management:

  • Provide visionary leadership and strategic direction for the overall operations of the hotel.
  • Develop and implement short-, medium-, and long-term business strategies aligned with the organization's objectives.
  • Translate the hotel's vision, mission, and strategic goals into measurable operational plans.
  • Lead the Executive Management Team in achieving business objectives and operational excellence.
  • Establish annual operational goals, departmental objectives, and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure effective corporate governance and sound management practices across all departments.
  • Advise the Board of Directors and Managing Director on operational performance, market opportunities, strategic initiatives, and business risks.

Operational Management & Service Excellence:

  • Direct and oversee all hotel operations to ensure seamless service delivery across every department.
  • Ensure consistent compliance with luxury hospitality standards and brand requirements.
  • Monitor departmental performance, operational efficiency, and guest satisfaction.
  • Conduct regular inspections of guest rooms, restaurants, bars, banquet halls, conference facilities, kitchens, spa, gymnasium, engineering facilities, public areas, laundry, and back-of-house operations.
  • Ensure all departments operate in accordance with approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Drive continuous service improvement initiatives that enhance the guest experience.
  • Promote cross-functional collaboration to ensure efficient hotel operations.

Financial Management & Profitability:

  • Develop and implement strategies to achieve revenue growth and sustainable profitability.
  • Prepare, review, and approve annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Monitor departmental financial performance against approved budgets and business targets.
  • Review daily revenue reports, occupancy levels, Average Daily Rate (ADR), Revenue per Available Room (RevPAR), Gross Operating Profit (GOP), departmental profit margins, and cash flow.
  • Drive cost optimization initiatives while maintaining exceptional service quality.
  • Monitor food cost, beverage cost, labour cost, procurement expenditure, utility consumption, and operating expenses.
  • Review monthly financial statements, management accounts, and variance analyses.
  • Ensure prudent financial management, effective cash flow management, and protection of hotel assets.
  • Approve expenditures in accordance with the hotel's Delegation of Authority Policy.

Revenue Management & Business Development:

  • Develop strategies to maximize occupancy, room rates, banquet revenue, and overall hotel profitability.
  • Collaborate with the Sales & Marketing team to increase market share and revenue opportunities.
  • Build strategic relationships with government institutions, embassies, multinational corporations, airlines, travel agencies, event planners, conference organizers, and online travel agencies (OTAs).
  • Identify new revenue opportunities through conferences, events, catering, memberships, wellness services, and strategic partnerships.
  • Monitor competitor activities, market trends, and guest preferences.
  • Promote innovation in hospitality products and guest experiences.

Guest Experience & Brand Management:

  • Ensure exceptional guest satisfaction across all service touchpoints.
  • Personally engage with VIP guests, diplomats, government officials, long-stay guests, corporate executives, and high-profile visitors.
  • Monitor guest feedback, online reviews, and guest satisfaction surveys.
  • Resolve escalated guest complaints promptly and professionally.
  • Protect and strengthen the hotel's brand reputation.
  • Maintain luxury hospitality standards throughout the property.
  • Foster a guest-centric culture focused on personalized and memorable experiences.

Human Capital Management:

  • Provide leadership, coaching, and direction to Heads of Departments.
  • Approve organizational structures, workforce planning, and succession management initiatives.
  • Promote employee engagement, teamwork, diversity, inclusion, and professional development.
  • Oversee recruitment, onboarding, training, performance management, disciplinary processes, employee relations, and talent development.
  • Ensure compliance with labour legislation and organizational policies.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, professionalism, integrity, and continuous learning.
  • Identify and develop future leaders within the organization.

Quality Assurance & Continuous Improvement:

  • Establish and maintain quality assurance systems across all hotel operations.
  • Conduct routine operational audits and service quality inspections.
  • Benchmark hotel performance against international hospitality standards.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that enhance operational efficiency and guest satisfaction.
  • Monitor implementation of departmental corrective action plans.
  • Promote innovation and operational excellence throughout the hotel.

Risk Management, Compliance & Corporate Governance:

  • Ensure compliance with all statutory, regulatory, and corporate governance requirements.
  • Maintain effective internal control systems and enterprise risk management frameworks.
  • Oversee compliance with fire safety, occupational health and safety, food safety, environmental regulations, and security standards.
  • Ensure successful completion of internal and external audits.
  • Develop business continuity and crisis management plans.
  • Protect the hotel's assets, reputation, and intellectual property.
  • Promote ethical business conduct throughout the organization.

Engineering, Facilities & Asset Management:

  • Ensure all hotel facilities, infrastructure, equipment, and buildings are maintained to luxury hospitality standards.
  • Oversee preventive and corrective maintenance programmes.
  • Approve capital improvement projects, renovations, and refurbishment initiatives.
  • Monitor utility consumption and sustainability programmes.
  • Ensure compliance with engineering, environmental, and safety standards.
  • Protect the long-term value of the hotel's physical assets.

Sales, Marketing & Public Relations:

  • Lead the development and execution of the hotel's sales and marketing strategy.
  • Strengthen brand positioning and market visibility.
  • Represent the hotel at hospitality conferences, exhibitions, networking events, and business forums.
  • Build relationships with tourism agencies, hospitality associations, government bodies, diplomatic missions, and corporate organizations.
  • Oversee digital marketing, public relations, media engagement, and reputation management.
  • Drive strategic partnerships that support business growth.

Procurement & Supply Chain Oversight:

  • Ensure procurement activities are transparent, cost-effective, and compliant with organizational policies.
  • Review major procurement decisions and supplier performance.
  • Monitor inventory management and stock control systems.
  • Ensure uninterrupted supply of operational goods and services.
  • Promote value-for-money purchasing while maintaining quality standards.

Information Technology & Digital Transformation:

  • Oversee the deployment and effective utilization of hotel technology systems.
  • Ensure the integrity, security, and reliability of hotel information systems.
  • Support automation, digital transformation, and innovation initiatives.
  • Monitor the performance of the Property Management System (PMS), Point-of-Sale (POS), accounting software, and other operational systems.
  • Promote cybersecurity awareness and compliance with data protection regulations.

Sustainability & Corporate Social Responsibility:

  • Promote environmentally sustainable hotel operations.
  • Drive initiatives focused on energy conservation, water management, waste reduction, and responsible sourcing.
  • Support community engagement and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes.
  • Encourage sustainable business practices across all departments.

Reporting & Performance Management:

  • Prepare and present operational, financial, and strategic reports to the Board of Directors and Managing Director.
  • Review departmental KPIs and monitor business performance.
  • Analyse market trends, financial results, guest satisfaction metrics, and operational data to support strategic decision-making.
  • Ensure timely submission of statutory, financial, and operational reports.
  • Monitor achievement of strategic business objectives and implement corrective actions where necessary.

Qualifications and Requirements
Education and Certifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Hotel Management, Hospitality Management, Business Administration, Tourism Management, or a related discipline.
  • Master's Degree in Business Administration (MBA), Hospitality Management, or a related field is highly preferred.
  • Professional hospitality certifications (e.g., AHLEI, Certified Hotel Administrator (CHA), Marriott, Hilton, Radisson Blu, Hyatt, or IHG leadership programmes) are highly desirable.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 12 years' progressive hospitality management experience, with at least 5 years as a General Manager or Deputy General Manager in a luxury hotel.
  • Demonstrated success in managing multi-department hotel operations and driving business growth.
  • Proven experience managing Profit and Loss (P&L), budgeting, revenue management, and financial performance.
  • Strong knowledge of luxury hospitality operations, guest service excellence, and international hotel standards.
  • Experience using Property Management Systems (PMS), revenue management systems, ERP platforms, and hospitality technology solutions.
