Lead Cardiologist at African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE)

The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) Abuja is a 500-bed specialty hospital offering world-class comprehensive diagnostics and treatment in oncology, cardiovascular, and haematological care, and general medical and surgical services, along with top notch research and education. The AMCE will provide exceptional care to people on the African continent, regardless of their financial means. Developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in clinical partnership with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust., AMCE Abuja is the first of five centres planned for development in Africa.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Lead Cardiologist

Location: Apapa, Lagos
Employment Type: Full-time

Job Purpose

  • The Lead Cardiologist will provide strategic, clinical, and operational leadership for AMCE's cardiology service to advance the hospital's cardiovascular programme. The role holder will lead the delivery of high-quality, safe, evidence-based, and patient-centred cardiology care, while driving service development, multidisciplinary collaboration, clinical governance, quality improvement, teaching, research, and innovation across AMCE's cardiovascular programme.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
Clinical Care and Leadership:

  • Provide expert clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management for patients with complex cardiovascular conditions.
  • Lead consultant-level decision-making across outpatient clinics, inpatient reviews, emergency consultations, and multidisciplinary case discussions.
  • Provide clinical oversight for non-invasive and invasive cardiology services, ensuring appropriate escalation, referral, and continuity of care.
  • Communicate clearly with patients and families on diagnosis, treatment options, risks, benefits, and expected outcomes.
  • Review and approve clinical reports, treatment plans, discharge summaries, and follow-up recommendations where required.

Strategic Development and Service Excellence:

  • Develop and implement strategic plans, clinical pathways, and service improvement initiatives for AMCE’s cardiology service.
  • Strengthen integration between cardiology, cardiac diagnostics, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, intensive care, emergency medicine, and other relevant specialties.
  • Drive improvements in access, patient flow, turnaround time, patient experience, and clinical outcomes across the cardiology service.
  • Support the development of advanced cardiac programmes, including preventive cardiology, heart failure, cardiac imaging, rhythm management, and multidisciplinary cardiac care.
  • Contribute to workforce planning, equipment planning, and resource optimisation for sustainable service growth.

Governance, Quality Assurance and Patient Safety:

  • Ensure compliance with applicable clinical guidelines, regulatory requirements, professional standards, and AMCE policies.
  • Lead clinical audit, morbidity and mortality review, incident review, and quality improvement activities within cardiology.
  • Monitor service performance indicators, patient outcomes, safety standards, and documentation quality.
  • Promote safe use of cardiology equipment, infection prevention standards, medication safety, and effective clinical risk management.
  • Support accreditation readiness and continuous improvement across the cardiovascular service.

Leadership, Teaching and Research:

  • Provide clinical leadership, mentorship, and supervision to consultants, fellows, residents, cardiac physiologists, nurses, and allied health professionals.
  • Facilitate teaching, case reviews, grand rounds, clinical training, and continuing professional development activities.
  • Promote a culture of teamwork, accountability, ethical practice, compassion, and patient-centred care.
  • Lead or participate in cardiology research, innovation, publications, and collaboration with AMCE’s clinical and academic partners.
  • Support performance management, capability development, and succession planning within the cardiology team.

Qualifications

  • Medical Degree (MBBS, MBBCh, MD, or equivalent) from a recognised medical school.
  • Completed specialist fellowship, residency, or equivalent postgraduate training in Cardiology from a recognised institution.
  • Valid medical licence and specialist registration with the appropriate national or international regulatory body.
  • Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is essential.
  • Additional qualifications in clinical leadership, healthcare management, cardiac imaging, interventional cardiology, heart failure, or related subspecialty areas will be an added advantage.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years’ Consultant-level experience in cardiology practice.
  • Demonstrated experience leading cardiology services in a tertiary hospital, advanced cardiac centre, academic medical centre, or international hospital environment.
  • Strong expertise across non-invasive and invasive cardiology, with demonstrable competence in complex cardiovascular case management.
  • Proven track record in clinical governance, quality improvement, service development, multidisciplinary collaboration, and team leadership.
  • Experience with electronic medical records (EMR), cardiac imaging/workflow systems, clinical audit, and outcome reporting is highly desirable.
