Job Description

  • The Manager Cargo Operations and Berth Planning is responsible for the day-to-day successful operations of the organization.
  • This job role is one of accomplishing work through others, assuring the development of the people in the organization through coaching and mentoring them.
  • Manager Cargo Operations and Berth Planning assure the economic and efficient movement of cargo.
  • The Manager Cargo Operations and Berth Plannings must work with urgency. Major challenges and rewards of this role come from working in a fast paced, ever-changing environment.

Essential Functions

  • Day to day local management of Berth planning and Cargo operations, M&R and EQ. Primarily within Nigeria, but also to include other West Africa countries as directed by management.
  • Establish effective high-level vendor relationships and ensure compliance with QEM targets.
  • Ensure and monitor adherence to Standard Business Process in West Africa.
  • Develop local SOPs for more efficient day-to-day operations based on local regulations and processes.
  • Support the Regional Berth Planning Manager in obtaining Berthing windows with the Terminal and monitor operations versus prospects.
  • Provide cost estimates/on ground arrangements for special cargo, such as break bulk and out-of-gauge (OOG) shipments, ensuring accurate pricing and cost calculations.
  • Support the handling of dangerous goods (DG) containers with special requirements, such as Class 1 and 7, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and regulations.
  • Planning movements of containers, chassis, etc. particular focus on:
  • Transport (Truck & Barge) Empty Evacuation.
  • No movement without Proper Vendor Agreement.
  • Ensure 100% delivery on empty evacuation.
  • Truck and Barge Tracking Off / On to be monitored daily.
  • Additional cost on Trucking / Barge to be reported within one hour of activity.
  • Communicate any issues or potential risks to Area Office.
  • Arrange local port formalities, ensuring compliance with port regulations and facilitating smooth operations for vessels.
  • Represent the company within the port community, maintaining positive relationships with port authorities, pilot stations, and other relevant entities.
  • Facilitate commercial and company visits to terminals and Hapag vessels, coordinating schedules, providing necessary information, and ensuring a smooth visitor experience.
  • Perform data maintenance in PortChain and other port community systems, ensuring accurate and up-to-date information.
  • Responsible for timely maintenance of Terminal information in Ankeri for locations within scope, where no Terminal Performance Manager exists.
  • Ensures accuracy and timeliness of updates to ensure the Terminal has the latest most up-to-date information.
  • Coordinate cut & run (whenever required) for vessels and finalize priority cargo after coordinating with Cargo control / Transshipment / ED / cargo ops planning.
  • Attend weekly/monthly (as per requirement) terminal performance meetings along with regional/area stakeholders.
  • Keep all stakeholders informed about any change in terminal / local tariffs / adherence to local regulations.
  • Handle Long-standing laden containers: In line with local regulation arrange for survey / destruction / auction / sell.
  • Monitor & update vessel/cargo operations during vessel port stay. Monitoring pre/post idle / stoppage of cargo operations / delays.
  • Oversee husbanding / cargo ops tasks which have been outsourced to external agents.
  • Monitor and approve late gate requests, ensuring compliance with established protocols.
  • Solving operations problems and resolving claims.
  • Reviewing and grading vendors’ performance.
  • Dealing with over-dimension cargo.
  • Budgeting and controlling costs.
  • Representing the company at various industry meetings e.g., Shippers Association of Nigeria.
  • Liaison with Africa’s Quality Service Centers (QSC) for control on operational administration matters.
  • Interviewing, screening, and selecting department team, coaching, training, and mentoring operations staff.
