The AMCE will provide exceptional care to people on the African continent, regardless of their financial means. Developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in clinical partnership with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust., AMCE Abuja is the first of five centres planned for development in Africa.

Job Title: Junior Consultant - Cardiology

Job Objective

  • The Junior Consultant, General Cardiology will provide specialized clinical care to patients with cardiovascular conditions, ensuring high standards of diagnosis, treatment, and patient management.
  • The role involves delivering high-quality, patient-centered care to patients, participating in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
Expert Clinical Care & Patient Management:

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients with cardiovascular disorders, including history-taking, physical examinations, and interpretation of diagnostic tests (e.g., ECG, echocardiography, cardiac biomarkers).
  • Develop and implement evidence-based treatment plans for conditions such as coronary artery disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, and valvular heart disease.
  • Assist in performing and interpreting invasive and non-invasive cardiac procedures (e.g., angiography, stress tests, pacemaker implantation).
  • Monitor patients' progress, adjust treatment plans as needed, and manage complications.
  • Provide clear and empathetic communication to patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment options, and lifestyle modifications.
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient care activities in electronic medical records.

Clinical Governance & Quality Assurance:

  • Participate in clinical audits, morbidity and mortality meetings, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care standards.
  • Adhere to AMCE’s protocols, national guidelines, and international best practices in cardiology.
  • Report and analyze adverse events or near-misses, contributing to root cause analyses and corrective actions.
  • Ensure compliance with patient safety protocols, including infection control and medication safety.
  • Contribute to the development and updating of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of advancements in cardiology through continuous professional development.

On-Call & Emergency Responsibilities:

  • Respond promptly to acute cardiac events (e.g., STEMI, cardiac arrest) and lead resuscitation efforts.
  • Collaborate with emergency department staff to triage and manage critical cardiac cases.
  • Ensure timely follow-up of patients admitted under cardiology during on-call periods.
  • Document all emergency interventions and hand over cases effectively to the day team.
  • Participate in debriefing sessions to review emergency cases and identify areas for improvement.

Education & Mentorship:

  • Supervise and mentor junior medical staff, including residents and medical officers, providing guidance on clinical cases and procedures.
  • Conduct teaching sessions for medical students and nursing staff on cardiology topics.
  • Provide constructive feedback to trainees and support their professional development.
  • Assist in the orientation and training of new staff joining the cardiology team.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning and evidence-based practice within the directorate

Administrative and Professional Duties:

  • Ensure compliance with AMCE’s policies and regulatory standards.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and strategic planning.
  • Contribute to service redesign and workflow optimization.
  • Maintain professional development through Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities.
  • Uphold ethical standards and patient confidentiality.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams for holistic patient care

Research & Academic Contribution:

  • Participate in clinical research projects, including data collection, analysis, and publication of findings.
  • Engage in departmental or multicenter clinical trials related to cardiovascular diseases.
  • Present research findings at local, national, or international conferences.
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends and innovations in cardiology through literature reviews and professional networks.
  • Collaborate with academic institutions to enhance the directorate’s research output.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration:

  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including cardiac surgeons, radiologists, and allied health professionals, to coordinate patient care.
  • Communicate effectively with referring physicians to ensure seamless continuity of care.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings (e.g., heart team meetings, tumor boards) to discuss complex cases.
  • Liaise with laboratory and imaging departments to expedite diagnostic processes.
  • Engage with hospital administration to optimize resource utilization for cardiology services.
  • Maintain professional relationships with external stakeholders, such as pharmaceutical companies and research collaborators.

Ethical Practice & Patient Advocacy:

  • Uphold the highest ethical standards in patient care, ensuring informed consent and confidentiality.
  • Advocate for patients’ rights and involve them in shared decision-making processes.
  • Address patient and family concerns with empathy and professionalism.
  • Adhere to AMCE’s policies on ethical dilemmas, end-of-life care, and resource allocation.
  • Serve as a role model for ethical behavior and professional conduct for junior staff.
  • Participate in hospital ethics committees or patient advocacy initiatives as required.

Leadership & Operational Efficiency:

  • Assist in the strategic planning and implementation of cardiology services in alignment with hospital goals.
  • Contribute to efficient resource management, including equipment, supplies, and staffing.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and provide input on service improvements.
  • Ensure timely completion of administrative tasks, such as discharge summaries and referral letters.
  • Support the implementation of new technologies or protocols to enhance service delivery.
  • Assist in the recruitment and performance evaluation of junior medical staff.

Professional Development:

  • Pursue continuous professional development through courses, certifications, and conferences.
  • Maintain active membership in relevant professional bodies.
  • Seek feedback from peers and supervisors to identify areas for growth.

Requirements
Education, Skills and Competencies:

  • Medical Degree (MBBS, MD, MBChB, or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
  • Postgraduate qualification (e.g., DM/DNB Cardiology, MRCP, or equivalent board certification).
  • Completion of residency training in cardiology with hands-on experience in invasive and non-invasive procedures.
  • Minimum 1-to-3-year post fellowship experience
  • Valid medical license to practice medicine.
  • Proficiency in diagnosing and managing a wide range of cardiovascular conditions (e.g., CAD, heart failure, arrhythmias, valvular diseases etc.).
  • Skilled in performing and interpreting:
    • ECGs, echocardiograms (TTE/TEE), stress tests, and Holter monitoring.
    • Cardiac CT, MRI, and nuclear imaging studies.
  • Expertise in emergency cardiology, including:
    • STEMI management, cardiac arrest response (ACLS), and critical care support.
    • Thrombolysis, defibrillation, and hemodynamic stabilization.
  • Ability to supervise and train junior residents, nurses, and medical students.
  • Experience in conducting academic sessions, such as journal clubs, case discussions, and simulation training.
  • Strong decision-making skills in high-pressure clinical scenarios.
  • Effective delegation and team coordination in emergency and procedural settings.
  • Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) and hospital management systems.
  • Knowledge of radiation safety and infection control protocols in cath labs.

Must have skills:
