Posted on Sat 15th Mar, 2014 - hotnigerianjobs.com --- (62 comments)

Authorities of National Hospital, Abuja, on Saturday  confirmed seven persons among 67,000 Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) job applicants in the FCT dead.

The applicants had converged on the National Stadium, Abuja, one of the venues for the test to fill 5,000 vacancies in NIS and many were said to have arrived at the centre before 6a.m.

7 die at Immigrations Recruitment in Abuja

The service had fixed the test nationwide for the 7,000 applicants for the available jobs.

However, a stampede ensued at the FCT centre about 7a.m. when the screening of candidates was to start for the test scheduled for 4p.m.

Mr Tayo Haastrup, the spokesman for the hospital, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the seven, five women and two men, were brought in dead and that the bodies had been deposited at the mortuary.

“The hospital received some casualties from the stampede from the ongoing Immigration recruitment at the National Stadium. Those that died were seven in number, five women are and two men, their corpses have been deposited at the mortuary, “ Haastrup said.

He said the hospital was stabilising those brought in unconscious from the stampede, while other casualties had been taken to other hospitals, including Asokoro General Hospital.

NAN recalls that in 2008, no fewer than 20 people died in various states of the federation during a similar exercise conducted by the Ministry of Interior for Nigeria Prisons Service, Nigeria Immigration Service and Customs Service. (NAN)

This is the most disgraceful test I have ever witnessed in Nigeria...its a clear indication that nothing can work in this nation is after collecting 1,000 naira from countless Nigerian youths the ministry of interior cannot conduct a peaceful and stress free test for applicants...its so shameful. I was at Akure centre for the test and you need to see how officer of NIS were beating Nigerian youths with Layard and belt while the place was unorganised and everybody was looking for a way out, I had to leave the place because I can not imagine myself being dehumanised by those officers all in the name of applying for a job that has already being given out in quotas to the "oga at the tops". This is shameful for Nigeria.

Its quite a pity, may their soul rest in peace, for those blaming, insulting and calling Jonathans name, is it Jonathans fault, why not blame the organizers of the exams, must jonathan be everywhere and for over 67000 canndidates only in abuja not to talk of the whole nation seeking for just 5000 positions, is it not high time we began to think of what we can do for ourselves instead of being too lazy waiting for jonathan to come and give us job

Hey mr. Wiseone. Are you really wise? What has this got to do with Jonathan's administration? Did Mr President invite you for the job test? Yes we all frown at the ugly situation but it would be more appropriate if you channel you blame to the right people and get Mr President out of this

Dis country should start having d youth at heart.serious plans should be made for unemployed youths in dis country before we have an outbreak.whether we like it or not every year almost 39000graduate come out in each batch of nydc and we have 3batches in a year.no place for them.next year another set and it goes like dat.govt may not carry all but create and opportuity for d private sector to recruit. Allow people go into self development give small loans to encourage them without govt harassing and frustrating efforts or govt officials eating d money. Lets make Nigeria a better place to live. Lets not create our problems ourselves. Lets curb corruption and leave a legacy behind.

In Lagos NIS recruitment many pregnant women fainted when civil defence was shutting gun in air looking for way to Manoeuvre NIS motor out of 80,000 plus applicants that came to write exam @ National Stadium Surulere, Lagos. meanwhile only 10 per cent got exam paper but no place to submit it. I think this test was conducted so as not to refund the money collected/realised from applicants due to over popullation because recruitment can not base on this perfomance.

Let's be constructive /objective in our criticism. What has Jonathan to do with the organization of the immigration exam? Is he the minister of interior or the comptroller General ? The appropriate authority should always be blamed for any inefficiency. Unarguably, the conduct of the exam was laughable & nothing to write home about.many didn't write in my centre. May the souls of those who died rest in peace.

This was the reason I decided not to go for the test, because I know its just a charade by the government and also pointless.i and luckly for I,I.received I call that a c.e.o. Of one of the leading companies in IT industry said that I should come to his private residence with my cv.I rushed to the man's mansion with my cv and waited patiently for 2hrs.when he finally appeared,we had a long chat and collected my cv and offered me a place in his company immediately and notified his HOUR manager.so had it been that i travelled for this useless immigration test,I would ve missed this opportunity.

@David, from your comment,it is obvious that you are in the system(government) that is perpetually bastardizing the values and morale worth of the youths of this great nation. You said, and i quote 'did Jonathan send me to write the exam'. No, he did not,why should he? It takes a good leader to appoint qualified individuals to head delicate positions. If you have been opportuned to travel to some developed countries, you would realized that when there is failure in a system and worst still, resulted in a case of multiple fatality, the head of such ministry or government agency would resign and also the president that appointed such person(s). However, the reverse is the case in Nigeria. So,if you would be rationale at your reasoning, your question should have been; is Jonathan a credible leader? if really he was, he should have been more tactical in selecting accountable personnel to handle such position. Talking about credibility,is it not under his regime you would hear all forms of financial misappropriation and all other vices.Yes,i have every right to seek for job because i am a citizen of Nigeria, just as he(Jonathan) was once a job applicant before he got to where he is today.
