Protection Officers at the Danish Refugee Council (DRC)

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a private, independent, humanitarian organization working on all aspects of the refugee cause in more than 30 countries throughout the world. The aim of DRC is to protect refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) against persecution and to promote durable solutions to the problems of forced migration, on the basis of humanitarian principles and human rights. DRC works in accordance with the UN Conventions on Refugees and the Code of Conduct for the ICRC and NGOs in Disaster Relief. 

DRC has opened a new country programme in Nigeria focusing on responding to the huge humanitarian

DRC operations was initially focus on Yola and Mubi in Adamawa State, and has opened base in Maiduguri, Borno State and from there DRC has focus on meeting the basic needs (protection, WASH, food security and shelter) of urban caseloads as well as supporting outreach to affected areas and displacement camps. DRC also maintains a representational office in Abuja and a larger coordination and field based implementation office in Yola, Adamawa State. DRC is also currently assessing the possibility of operationalizing a hub in Yobe State.

We are recruiting to fill the vacant position below:

Job Title: Protection Officer

Location: Maiduguri

Tasks and Responsibilities
Protection monitoring and referrals:

• Mapping of services available for IDPs; Developing referral pathways/mechanisms;
• Monitoring of the needs of displaced population with main focus on persons with special needs (women, children, elderly, disabled etc.);
• Management of individual cases;
• Planning/participation in group-based psychosocial support activities for men, women, adolescents and children
• Planning/participation in Rapid Needs Assessments to understand protection needs of target populations;
• Delivery of humanitarian aid
• Provide advice and guidance as well as referrals to IDPs on issues related to accessing required services;
• Provide individual, needs-based assistance to IDP families based on internal guidelines developed by DRC;
• Support community based protection committees in identification of protection risks in the community and addressing such risks;

Training and capacity building:

• Participation and support to Protection Sector working Group as required;
• Provide trainings/capacity building to duty bearers, international and local NGOs and IDP communities on protection related issues (guiding principles of IDP protection; child protection; SGBV etc.);
• Participation in psychosocial activities targeting women, children, adolescents, adults;
• Internal/External Coordination and Representation
• Represent the project at the relevant coordination fora with partner organizations as well as duty bearers when/if required;
• Support with occasional document translation and provide interpretation support to Protection Manager during meetings, trainings, and other project activities.

Reporting & Accountability:

• Collect and maintain project data ensuring the highest standards of data protection and confidentiality.
• Prepare high quality and timely internal reports and provide input in drafting donor reports and other project related documents as required.
• Produce high quality and timely reports for DRC and donors within agreed deadlines.
• Comply with all relevant DRC policies and procedures, particularly with respect to child protection, the code of conduct, and security.

Key Requirements

• Graduate degree in Psychology, Social Work, Education, Law or a relevant equivalent.
• At least 2-3 years of working experience in a social service, psychology, education, or development sector; Previous working experience with humanitarian agencies will be considered as a strong advantage;
• Good understanding of international human rights and principles of humanitarian work.
• Good facilitation skills; experience designing and delivering training curricula, preferably focused on adult learning;
• Ability and willingness to maintain regular presence at project sites and to work during irregular working hours and in insecure environments.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills.
• Positive ‘can-do’ attitude and resilience.
• Good computer skills (Excel, Microsoft, PowerPoint and Outlook).
• Fluency in English and local language is required.
