News: FG To Recruit Additional 1,000 Teachers

The Federal Government has said that plans are underway to recruit about 1,000 fresh teachers in order to address the challenges of inadequate teachers in the Federal Unity Schools.

Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, made this known in Abuja, on Monday, at a meeting he held with all the principals of the 102 Federal Government Colleges.

Wike said the efforts of the government to build and improve on the teaching and learning infrastructures would not yield any positive results without qualified teachers to teach the children.

He explained that government was concerned about the acute shortage of teachers in technical and science education, saying the new teachers to be employed would be in the areas of Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, English Language and other science related subjects.

He recalled that the Federal Government had recently approved the upgrade of about 1,000 Parents Teachers Association Teachers (PTA) or casual teachers to permanent teachers.

According to him, the letters of postings would soon be issued to them but stressed that this was not enough, which is why the government has to embark on recruitment of fresh 1000 teachers to beef-up the staff strength, especially in the critical areas.

In a related development, the minister announced plan to build new technical workshops and equipment of science laboratories in all the Federal Government Colleges across the country.

Accordingly, he told the principals at the meeting to submit proposals for equipment needed in their science laboratories and two workshops for each technical school.

He said the present administration had priorities technical and vocational education.

Some of the principals who spoke at the meeting harped on acute shortage of teachers particularly in Mathematics and English Language and asked the Federal Government to recruit more teachers.
