WhatsApp Community Moderator (Volunteer) at Rec Room Wellness

Rec Room Wellness is a social enterprise dedicated to addressing the global mental health crisis by creating safe and brave spaces for relaxation, education, and fun. At our events, you will learn important topics to boost your awareness of your mental health, put words to feelings, and build resilience against the adversities of life. You will also practice self-care activities, learn new hobbies, and create connections with like-minded community members. We also offer wellness workshops for students and staff, longitudinal wellness cohorts, and in-person wellness events and retreats.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: WhatsApp Community Moderator (Volunteer)

Location: Lagos

Objective

• To foster a safe, supportive, and welcoming online space for young adults seeking mental wellness. Community Moderators are responsible for monitoring Rec Room Wellness’ digital platform, encouraging healthy conversations, de-escalating conflict, and ensuring our community guidelines are upheld.

Schedule & Availability

• Platform Monitoring: Daily check-ins (minimum 2x/day)
• Engagement Prompts: Weekly engagement prompts (Tuesday and Friday)
• Monthly Report: Submit observations or flag summaries every last Saturday (EOD)
• Community Events: Required attendance and support during digital events or live chats
• Typical check-ins can happen in the morning and evening (suggested 15–20 minutes per session).

Responsibilities

• Monitor discussions in Rec Room Wellness’ WhatsApp community
• Flag or remove inappropriate content in line with our Community Guidelines
• Welcome new members with warmth and offer helpful resources
• Share new Rec Room Wellness blog posts and official announcements with the community
• Facilitate positive engagement (ask questions, spark conversations, respond kindly)
• Encourage participation in ongoing campaigns, blog conversations, or wellness challenges
• Escalate serious concerns (e.g., mental health crises or harassment) to the Communications and Content Lead or Mental Health First Aider
• Suggest weekly conversation starters or polls to maintain community engagement
• Moderate the chat during live events and Q&A sessions

What to Watch For
Moderators should stay alert to:

• Bullying or trolling
• Off-topic or spam posts
• Misinformation, especially related to health
• Inappropriate language or triggering content
• Signs of distress (e.g., suicidal ideation, threats, self-harm)
• If you are unsure about whether a post should be removed, take a screenshot and contact the Community Lead.

Tools:

• You will receive moderator-level access to our WhatsApp community
• Use WhatsApp group chats for team communication
• Use the shared Community Log Sheet to document flags or wins
• Training resources will be provided during onboarding

Community Tone and Values:

• Moderators are expected to model the following values:
  • Empathy: Assume good intent, validate feelings
  • Respect: Create space for different perspectives and honor lived experiences
  • Playfulness: Embrace joy, memes, and wellness-oriented fun
  • Boundaries: Be kind, not intrusive. You are not expected to act as a therapist

Weekly Reports Include:

• Community wins or positive highlights
• Any flagged posts or concerns
• Suggestions for improvement or tools needed
• Notable member engagement (shoutouts!)
• Suggestions for community engagement for the next week

Requirements
Skills & Qualities:

• Strong organizational and time-management skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication.
• Ability to track multiple tasks and follow up diplomatically.
• Reliable, proactive, and detail-oriented.
• Comfortable working in a collaborative, team-based environment.

Other Requirements:

• An interest in mental wellness, service, and positive community building
• Consistency and reliability (5-10 hours weekly, depending on role)
• Good communication skills
• Openness to learning and teamwork
