Federal Ministry of Younth Decelopment - Following the approval of His Excellency, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and in line with youth empowerment programme thrust under the Transformation Agenda of Mr. President, the Federal Ministry of Youth Development (FMYD) in conjunction with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) invite applications from suitably qualified young Nigerians to participate in the Junior Professional Officers’ Programme (JPO-P) 

The Junior Professional Officers’ Programme (JPO-P) was established in 1963 to provide young professionals pursuing a career in development with hands-on experience in multilateral technical cooperation. It is funded with donations from donor countries. Currently, there are 19 sponsors comprising 16 countries from Europe and 3 from Asia. The programme is administered by the JPO Service Center in Copenhagen. Denmark and initially for one year with possibility of extension for another one year, depending on satisfactory performance making a total of two years objective of the programme

Objective of the WHO Programme/Department:
In line with the WHO Global Mental Health Action Plan (2013-2010), the objective of the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse is to promote effective strategies and interventions to implement mental health promotion, prevention and treatment interventions and achieve a significantly higher coverage of key interventions in resource-poor countries.

The Junior Professional Officer (JPO) will support the Department in its work with governments and NGO partners to care of mental disorder in people exposed to adversity (e.g, physical and sexual violence, loss, conflict, disaster). Copied from: www.hotnigerianjobs.com

Duties, Responsibilities and Output expectations
Under the overall supervision of the team's Scientist, the JPO shall perform the following duties and responsibilities:
  • Supporting the Department's work on developing and testing innovative face-to-face and e-methods to improve psychological care for people exposed to adversity to reduce mental health problems, including depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (50%)
  • Supporting the Department's work on developing and testing mhGAP primary health care protocols for use in humanitarian settings in collaboration with the United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees (25%).
  • Supporting the Department's work on the implementation of existing WHO and Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) policies and tools on mental health and psychosocial support in emergencies and (25%)
During the period of assignment, the JPO would have contributed to the following key outputs:
  • Innovative WHO tools to support people exposed to adversity
  • Implementation relevant WHO and IASC policies and tools
Qualifications and Experience:

Education:

Minimum: An advanced university degree in public health or mental health (e.g psychiatry, psychology, social work)
Desirable: (a) Both training in public health and in mental health, (b) training in cognitive-behavioural therapy. Copied from: www.hotnigerianjobs.com

Work experience:
  • Minimum: At least 2 years experience - during or after postgraduate training - in a psychosocial or mental health project or activity.
  • Desirable: At least 3 years experience - during or after postgraduate training - in a psychosocial or mental health project or activity, including field experience in resource-poor countries affected by emergencies.
Skills required for the assignment:
  • Minimum: Good English (reading, writing, speaking)
  • Desirable: Fluent English (reading, writing, speaking); good knowledge of a second UN language
  • Age: Must not be more than 32 years on the date of application
  • Information Technology skills, including word processing, database application (excel) presentation software (power point) and internet appreciation.
  • An interest in adapting to varied physical environments; and a desire to work with people with different language, national and cultural backgrounds;
  • Evidence of ability to think strategically, work independently and demonstrate a sense of self-assuredness.
  • Respect for the UN principles of the United Nations Charter and the participating UN organisation's mission statement.
